As a Citizen, I Believe it is Our Responsibility to Verify.
Reasons why YOU should verify what YOU read on social media.
We can’t complain because we won’t stand still for censorship in the current atmosphere of divisive politics, chaotic social manipulation, and plain falsehoods. However, we clamor for the government to do something, but the First Amendment and shady politics tie their hands.
If you are not verifying your shared data, you are either lazy, buried in your confirmation biases, or part of the problem. Either way, the messages being passed along are often unpopular, stellar lies, or nothing more than a weapon used to fragment our society. For example, I will not repost anything that I have not verified. However, I may pass something I know is fabulously false but with a caveat description to indicate my distaste for it.
I consider social media a valid tool for generating connections and allowing for expanding relationships; however, it requires that YOU take responsibility for both the information YOU put out and the negative impact it may have on any individual, company, or government. Don’t hide behind the First Amendment.
Verifying what you read on social media is crucial for several reasons, reflecting the complex nature of information dissemination in the digital age.
